Report on Transformation of Criminal Justice System in India submitted to Ministry of Home Affairs


Dr. Shashikala Gurpur received a letter dated 9th January 2020 from Shri Amit Shah, Home Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs New Delhi and a follow-up letter by Mr. Ajay Bhalla, IAS from Ministry bearing reference D.O. Letter No. 1/2/2019- Judl Cell I- dated 23rd June 2020, both pertaining to the opportunity to provide suggestions regarding amendments to Criminal laws especially IPC, CrPC, Indian Evidence Act, and NDPS Act. The Symbiosis Law School, Pune besides providing suggestions on the amendments to aforesaid laws, provided other important suggestions including separation of law & order and investigation wing, digital/paperless criminal justice system, establishment of investigation university, witness protection law, victim protection and prison reforms.

The research team conducted thorough research, consulted a variety of stakeholders through questionnaires, organized National Virtual Discussion and Public Consultation to ensure expert feedback and public participation, and prepared the report which can be accessed here.

The research results and the recommendations will be able to contribute to bring about citizen-centric reforms in the criminal justice system.
