LAW THEATRE SYMBHAV ’21

Symbiosis Law School Pune (SLS-P), a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) presented the Tenth Edition of Annual Law Theatre during the annual cultural fest, Symbhav 2021 . This unique event is the brain-child of Prof. (Dr.) S.B Mujumdar, Chancellor of Symbiosis International (Deemed university) who visioned amalgamation of drama and law. The event was held on 30th of April, 2021 at 11:30AM on the online platform “Symbhav Samaaro” and was attended by over 895 national and international attendees.

This year’s play, “Dar-ba-dar” was directed by Mr. Sachin Malvi and performed by the students of SLS-P. The play was inspired by the suo motu cognizance taken by the Supreme Court of India in light of the problems and miseries of migrant labourers who had been stranded in different parts of the country (In Re : Problems and Miseries of Migrant Labourers, Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No(S).6/2020).

The play successfully showcased the unfortunate conditions of migrant labourers who travelled on-foot and cycles long distances without adequate access to medical care, food and other basic amenities. Furthermore, the depiction of police brutality inflicted upon the workers considering them as the reason for the high spread of the virus was impactful and heart-wrenching.

The courtroom scene accurately depicted active participation by the judiciary in reviewing the steps undertaken by Central and State authorities including hospital and police to address the inadequacies and certain lapses.

The play ended with the judgement delivered by the Apex Court which held that the workers cannot be deprived of their right to health and life. The court also emphasised that effective concentrated efforts are required to redeem the situation. Additionally, guidelines were issued to provide the workers access to transportation, and implementation of employment schemes. The play appreciated the application of Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and quashing of the complaint against the migrant workers.

Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Director, Symbiosis Law School, Pune, Dean Faculty of Law, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) delivered the closing statement and thanked Director of Law Theater, Mr. Sachin Malve, and faculty-in-charges of the event. She appreciated the performance of the students and the tireless efforts of the team to make the event successful even in an online platform. She also opined that “Law is a mystifying process and theatre brings it closer to people.”.

Mr. Sachin Malve thanked the student body for the production of the play and commended their efforts for the successful online law theatre. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Sawani Chothe, student, SLS-P who thanked the students, faculty and the various committees involved.
