Legal Aid and Literacy Cell
n Objectives:-
– To undertake pro bono publico (for the public good) activities through research, consultancy and extension.
– To promote social justice and raise the confidence of underprivileged.
– To built a network of the legal care leaders.
Programs and Activities:-
Legal Literacy and Awareness Programmes Conducted, outside Participations-
On November 17, 2008; ‘International Seminar on Community Lawyering in India’
n On November 17, 2008; Establishment of the Permanent Free Legal Aid Center at Pirangut.
n On 20/11/08 Prof. Santosh Aghav and Prof. Swati Kapre along with the C.L.R.N.(U.S.A.)Team participated in the seminar on ‘Community Lawyering and Social Justice-An Indo-American Experience’ at V.M.Salgaoncar Law College , State of Goa.
On 13/12/08 at SLS campus as a part of the CLRN project, SLS in association with the NGO-PCGT (Public Concern For Governance Trust) conducted a literacy , orientation programme on the topic ‘Right to Information and Corruption’ wherein the students participated in the street and Stage play.
n On 17/04/09 as Loksabha election were on the front SLS (CLRN)Project team members along with NGO-PCGT (Public Concern For Governance Trust) conducted a awareness programme at Paud, Pirangut on the topice- ‘Right vis-a-vis duty to Vote’. The aim was to encourage people to cast their valuable vote .
n On 5/4/09 SLS alongwith other two Law Colleges ( G.Adik Law College, Shrirampur and New Law College) from Ahmednagar District participated in the Mega Free Legal Aid Literacy Camp at Rashin . The said camp was organized by the ‘Late Shaivaji Raje Bhosale Gramvikas Pratisthan ’
n On 30/06/09 SLS(CLRN)Project team member attended the ‘workshop on Community College’ organized by Symbiosis Community College at SCDL Campus , Pune. The aim is to impart poor , disadvantaged persons skill based education to empower them in the society.
n On 21/03/09 Dr. David Ayditan ( Leibniz Uni. Germany) an Erasmus Mundus Scholar and visiting student Ms Nasrin Dashty khawidaky ( Hannover Uni) along with Prof. S. Aghav. visited the center where they observed the interaction between clients and Prof. S. Aghav.
n On 7/11/09 Prof. Santosh , Sukhwinder Singh and four France students visited the Pirangut Centre who were felicitated and welcomed by villagers. In afternoon session all visited to ACP office, Khadki where they interviewed A.C.P. Mr. B. Thorat and Legal Advisor Mr. Ijaj Pathan.
n On the occasion of Human Rights Day on 10th Dec, 2009 Cell has invited students participation by preparing Slogan on the human rights as ell as to submit paintings, caricatures, photographs, cartoons etc. The best three were awarded in each head of the activity by the hands of Mr. Verrappa Moily Hon,ble Minister for Law and Company Affairs on 10th Jan 2010 in the Law Day function . Participation certificates were issued to all students .
n On Friday ,11th Dec,2009 Prof. Santosh Aghav, and Adv. Sharad Madke delivered the lecture on Legal Aid Services Act and Protection of Consumer Rights at Bhimthadi Jatra organized by Baramti Agricultural Trust , Baramati for a fest of self help group all over from Maharashtra at Agriculture College Ground, khadki road , pune.
n On Wednesday 16th Dec,2009 SLS Legal Aid Cell , ILSA Chapter and Public Concern for Governance Trust (PCGT ) organized a Symposium on, ‘ Difficulties in Prosecuting Corrupt Officials’ wherein Former Commissioner Mr. Krishnan ,ACB ,Pune , Adv .Asim Sarode and D.M. Dhakephalkar, Retd. District Judge have contributed in the sessions.
n On 21st Dec.2009 Prof. Santosh and Atmaram attended the meeting with the SOFOSH ( NGO) where they visited the child care branch .
n Between 18th May- 21 May 2010 a programme as ‘Mahatma Gandhi Tantamukti Gao Yojna ’ at Pirangut village was conducted where in 8 matters were settled by learned panelists comprised by advocate,retired judge , faculty , social activists.
n On Saturday, 2nd Jan.2010.Adv. S. Madke delivered the lecture and gave consultancy to Pirangut villagers on the ‘Rights of the Consumer and Use of Lok Adalat’ at Bhairavnath Temple ,Pawale Gali, Pirangut. Prof. Abhijeet also accompanied Adv .Madke in the consultancy.
n On Thrusday14th Centre for Justice Education and Centre for Legal Care-Legal Aid Cell of SLS organized a Student Law Review (Case Discussion ) on the important matters like Dinkarans Impeachment, Ruchikas Suicide , Madhu Kodas Corruption matters at SLS Auditorium at 11:00am-2:00 pm where three team comprised of two members on each matter made presentation on which expert comments were added by Adv. Sampat Bulusu and Adv. L. Salgaonkar attended by and participated by LL.M. students, Legal Aid Cell Members and Faculty Members of Centre of Excellence for Justice Education , foreign students, guest visitors .
n On Saturday, 16th Jan.10 Prof. Santosh Aghav and Prof. S.Hajare and Five students of SLS attended the event ‘ Re-arguing Kesavananda Bharati’organised by The Centre of Public Law of Law College , Pune on the 90th birth anniversary of Shri Nani A.Palkhiwala.
On 30-31st july 2010 in association with State Legal Services Authority legal aid camps were conducted at Khadki, Lohegaon, Sadashiv Peth, Erandwane
Objects:
- To provide legal aid and advise through a panel of Advocates, Academicians and Scholars.
- To spread legal literacy and awareness by conducting Camps and workshops, Street plays, Campaigns, distribution of pamphlets, display of paintings and hoardings etc.
- To propagate the importance of alternative dispute resolution mechanism (ADRS) and to prevent legal disputes.
- To build a network of community lawyers.
- To facilitate community access to justice.
Activities conducted by SLS:
n Socio-legal Survey and legal aid camp at Pirangut which leads to establishment of Legal Aid Centre.
