ECOCON (Environment Protection and Consumer Rights Organization), is an initiative of the students of Symbiosis Law School. It was established in the year 2005-06, with the aim of making the earth greener and making the market a fair place, making consumers aware of their rights and their duties towards the environment, making people use eco-friendly and recyclable products, empowering consumers in distress, making corporations (like the PMC) responsible towards the environment.
In order to accomplish the aims of the cell various projects have been undertaken, two of which have been listed below -
MULA MUTHA PROJECT- The Mula-Mutha River is highly polluted due to a number of reasons- Industries set up on banks discharging toxic waste into the river without treating it, people living on its banks discharging domestic waste into the river, weed problem in the river, etc. in order to bring the pitiful condition of the river to the attention of civic authorities. Ecocon had many awareness sessions, workshops etc to inform people of the condition of the local river.
THE TELECOM PROJECT- Today telecom subscribers are among the most distressed people whose grievances are not addressed. They are given unsatisfactory answers by the customer care executives at the call centers after being overcharged, their balances debited for services they have never used, forcefully subscribed to services they do not need and pestered with advertisement calls. Ecocon took note of this and conducted a series of seminars and informative sessions informing subscribers of their rights. Help desks were set up at various sister institutions of Symbiosis to forward the consumer grievances to the nodal officers of various Telecom companies.
