Symbiosis is a Greek term meaning 'Living together for the mutual benefit of each other. Symbiosis is an educational and cultural center of international standards. Established in the year 1971, under the patronage of Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, President & Founder Director, it is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. Symbiosis Law School, established in June 1977, was affiliated in the beginning to the University of Pune. Further, another important stride was made in 2002 when SLS became the constituent college of Symbiosis International University. Thereby, SLS gained an enhanced degree of autonomy in teaching, learning and research.

Symbiosis has been the meeting point of noble thoughts. Being the academic meeting point for all kinds of talent in the legal arena, SLS has occupies pride of place among the flagship institutions of Symbiosis. Symbiosis Law School stands for a global leadership in legal education. Nestled in the city of Pune (popularly described as the Oxford of the East, with the glorious heritage of being the capital of the Peshwas), it has recently been conferred with the honor of being a core partner in the global network of legal institutes of Erasmus Mundus. It embodies the essence of Symbiosis which means living together for mutual benefit. This institute has co-existed as the only Legal Studies Institute with other flagship institutions of Symbiosis International University – a host of excellent institutions in Management and Information Technology. Further, it has networked with the government, judiciary, community, society, industry and the profession, for mutual benefit.

During its long journey of 32 years, it has created various milestones in a teaching and learning process. The unique profiles of its students consist of defence and corporate personnel. It is the first law college in Pune offering evening Law programs and is also a pioneer in introducing a five year Law program. Its innovative and creative educational experiments sets it apart from other law colleges in the city and the region. SLS has made a national impact being consistently ranked among the top ten law colleges of the country. It has been selected by the Government of India, Ministry of Social Welfare for awarding scholarships to SC & ST students.
